How I Trained for My Lavaman Triathlon in TWO WEEKS!

For a while now I’ve been getting the same questions from you guys…
“How did you do it?” “How did it go?”
So let me just start out by telling you this; I did it. I survived. (But I don’t really plan on doing them again, not really my thing…)
For those of you who don’t know what a triathlon is, it’s basically an Olympic like event. There’s a 1.5k swim, then a 40k bike ride, finishing the whole event off with a 10k run.
Oh. Did I mention that there are NO breaks in between?
I had NO experience with this kind of thing beforehand. But luckily when BioAstin called me up and asked me if I’d be interested in that free trip to Waikoloa, Hawaii to compete, I was already working out. It wasn’t like I’d just been sitting on the couch when the call came. I was still doing CrossFit 4 days a week as well as WODs and other workouts. I had a base to work from.
So for the training aspect, I started to implement the different events on top of my usual workouts. While I still continued to do CrossFit 4 times a week, I started to practice swimming for around an hour a day, twice a week.
I learned that I am NOT a very good swimmer. The experience was a bit humbling. While I had lived in Hawaii awhile back, and I did practice swimming, it was never in a competitive sort of way. Swimming, it turns out, takes A LOT out of you.
Another thing I started to do was a 30-minute bike ride, twice a week on the Airdyne bike. This was probably my hardest work out during the two weeks. I would do 30 second sprints, then slow down for 30 seconds, pick it back up…on and on for a full thirty minutes before hopping off and going right into a 2 mile run. Just to get my body adjusted to the quick transitions from one event to the next.
Like I said, there are no breaks during a triathlon!
I even added an extra day of CrossFit in there, bringing me up to 5 days of working out with two days for recovery time.
Nutrition wise, I was also luckily already covered. Since I was already in Ketosis, my body was keto-adapted which meant I would be able to use my ketones as fuel rather than glucose.
To stay on top of things, when it came to supplements; I would make myself this awesome pre-workout drink that I took 40 minutes before working out. A mix of Keto OS Max, and Cordyceps Mushrooms. You can learn more about using mushrooms to enhance all aspects of your life HERE
Now, these mushrooms are amazing! They have been used for thousands of years by different cultures for medicinal purposes. And they’re used today by Olympic athletes all over the world.
Fun Fact: these mushrooms grow on the backs of caterpillars.
What I like so much about this drink, is that there is so much legit scientific research done behind each product. Not only does it help, but there’s no crash afterwards. It’s not like this hyped-up caffeine fix. It’s a very powerful combo which helps me out, and has some noticeable effects.
In addition to this, in the mornings with my coffee, I continued to take BioAstin’s Hawaiian Astaxanthin. These gelcaps have SO many health benefits. For starters, they protect your joints. This is crucial, especially for runners. It protects your skin, eyes….they are a super powerful antioxidant!
As someone who played football in college, and today constantly works my joints with CrossFit, these are a real help! Even my girls take these!
Continuing on in the nutrition department, for this triathlon training, I bumped up my calorie intake up a little bit since I would be burning more than normal due to the additional training. So instead of 3,000 calories a day, I was at 3,500 a day, even adding in an extra meal so I would have three a day rather than two. Still sticking to 70% Fat, 25% Protein, and 5% carbs.
This is all what helped me to prepare for this event!
Now, you can be taking all the supplements you want, you can be eating 100% clean, and going to the gym, BUT, there is also the mental game about knowing you’re about to do a 3-hour workout, that you’ve never done before, in a different and unfamiliar territory.
The day before the big event, I traveled from Orlando to Hawaii in ONE day, under 21 hours, with a few stops along the way. By the time I got to my hotel it was around 10pm at night so I just crashed. I had to be up the next morning at 4:30am to start prepping myself for the triathlon!
And I did it!
I had a full serving of my pre-workout drink combo again, 40 minutes before we started, and packed a second serving for later. I skipped breakfast, only coffee for this guy. It took me around 40 minutes to swim the mile, but I felt pretty proud of myself. I didn’t have to stop once. I felt relaxed. I didn’t drown and since that had been my goal, I consider it a HUGE win! I just kept telling myself, “don’t drown, and don’t die.” I purposely went slow and focused on the swim.
By the time I got to the bike part of the event, I was still feeling really good. I took half a serving of my pre-workout drink.
Now the biking event was the worst. It took me about an hour to complete. I’ll be honest with you, it really sucked. Having to sit on that tiny seat, which had no padding by the way, all plastic… It just hurt so bad. And I didn’t really realize just how bad it was until I got off the bike and had to transition to the 6 mile run. My legs felt so heavy, like jell-o even.
So I chugged the other half of the drink (so I had two whole servings during the whole race) and I pushed through, even though each step felt like (excuse me for this) I was getting punched in the nuts. That bike seat just REALLY killed me.
But that was the worst. It was sweaty and it was humid. But I did it! I survived!
It took me 3 hours, 18 minutes to complete the triathlon and I feel like I did pretty good for like, my size and the fact that I only trained really for the 2 weeks prior. Not to mention a whole day of traveling literally the day before the event!
So I’m pretty proud of myself.
Would I do another one? Not anytime soon, but I probably would if I had the time to prepare myself…like maybe 3 or 4 months.
And a padded bike seat!
